NALANDA-SRIWIJAYA CENTRE LECTURE SERIES ‘1819 and Before: Singapore’s Pasts’

 

In commemoration of the bicentennial of Stamford Raffles’s establishment of an East India Company settlement on Singapore in 1819, the Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre (NSC), at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, has organised a special lecture series entitled ‘1819 and Before: Singapore’s Pasts’. This seminar series aims to introduce the premodern and early history of Singapore and to locate it in the broader region.

 

 

Seminar on “The Inception of Lion City”

 

This is the seventh instalment of a special lecture series commemorating Singapore’s bicentennial anniversary, “1819 and Before: Singapore’s Pasts”. Dr Iain Sinclair, Visiting Fellow at the Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre (NSC), deliver a lecture on “The Inception of Lion City”.

 

 

Seminar on “The Unforeseeable Future of Thai Politics after the 2019 Election”

 

Dr Kanokrat Lertchoosakul, a political scientist from the Chulalongkorn University, stressed that the 24 March elections made clear that Thai politics was more complex and exciting than a straightforward contest between elites and democratic forces.

 

 

Seminar on “Malaysia’s Indigenous People: Land Rights and Livelihoods”

 

This seminar travelled between Peninsular Malaysia and the eastern states of Sabah and Sarawak to explore the main issues faced by Malaysia’s indigenous communities. Much of the session focused on land rights and conflicts that arise from the disregard of indigenous rights to customary and ancestral lands.

 

 

 

The Politics of Contemporary Thai Buddhism

 

Dr Katewadee Kulabkaew’s seminar addressed the enduring but complicated role of Buddhism in Thai politics.

Social Media and Indonesia’s 2019 Elections

 

Social media is increasingly playing a vital role in Indonesia’s 2019 Presidential Campaign. Two prominent experts in the field, Mr Yose Rizal, founder of PoliticaWave.com, and Dr Ross Tapsell, senior lecturer and researcher at Australia National University, were at ISEAS to discuss the impact of social media on the election.

 

 

Thailand’s 2019 Elections: Volatile Voting, Elite Politics and the Struggle for a New Political Order

 

Dr Prajak Kongkirati, Assistant Professor, Head of the Department of Government and Associate Dean for Research and Academic Services in the Faculty of Political Science at Thammasat University Bangkok, delivered a highly engaging seminar on Thailand’s elections scheduled for 24 March 2019.
