Visiting Fellow/Fellow, Regional Social and Cultural Studies (RSCS) Programme (2 Years)

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage Sojourn: Journal of Social Issues in Southeast Asia journal as Editor to ensure timely and high quality publications
  • Conduct research on key social issues and trends in Southeast Asia in consultation with RSCS Coordinator and Director (Research).
  • Contribute regularly to Fulcrum and Perspective pieces.

Applicants’ areas of interests may include at least one of the following:

  • Youth and civic engagement in Southeast Asia
  • Religion and religious management in Southeast Asia
  • China’s socio-cultural influence in Southeast Asia
  • Expertise in one or more Southeast Asian countries

Administrative and Editorial Responsibilities include:

  • Manage research projects and budgetary matters.
  • Manage or assist in ISEAS events such as moderating seminars and planning.
  • General editorial work and other tasks and duties related to ISEAS and RSCS.

Requirements

  • PhD in Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science; Southeast Asian Studies, Chinese studies, Malay Studies, Development Studies or a related discipline
  • Clear policy-oriented perspectives on research issues 
  • 3-5 years of experience in a research centre, think tank, or academic institution
  • Experience in journal editing will be preferred
  • Strong interdisciplinary work with good track record in research and publications
  • Strong communication and writing skills in English; candidates with knowledge of Southeast Asian languages will be given preference.
  • Good interpersonal and networking skills
  • Preference will be given to Singaporeans and permanent residents

Fellowship Benefits include:

  • A highly competitive monthly (all-inclusive) stipend commensurate with his/her rank and experience; 
  • A round-trip economy airfare between the home country of the researcher and Singapore (applicable to non-Singaporeans only).

Application

Applications should include a cover letter, a full CV, two reference letters, and a research proposal of not more than five pages (double spaced). The proposal should discuss the topic to be examined, plans for any fieldwork and duration, projected timeline of research, and output. The preferred period for the fellowship should also be indicated.

Research Officer, ASEAN Studies Centre (2 Years)

Responsibilities:

  • Provides research support to the Lead Researchers in ASEAN Studies Centre
  • Assists in the editing and production of the Centre’s publications, including ASEANFocus and the State of Southeast Asia Survey Report
  • Assists in the organisation and management of conferences, training workshops and seminars/webinars including emceeing and note-taking as and when required
  • Maintains and expands the Centre’s webpage, mailing lists and social media including the active dissemination of its research outputs
  • Anchors the Centre’s public outreach efforts and supports projects related to the understanding of ASEAN and the promotion of ASEAN studies
  • Undertakes research projects under the guidance of ASC Lead Researchers

Requirements:

  • BA/MA degree in international relations, political science, economics, sociology, Southeast Asian Studies or related fields.
  • Good communication and writing skills in English
  • Proficiency in a Southeast Asian language is a bonus
  • Experience in copy-editing and other forms of editorial work would be highly desirable
  • Knowledge in quantitative survey methodologies and statistical work
  • Proficiency in statistical software such as Excel, Stata, or R
  • Data visualisation skills will be an advantage
  • Positive work attitude and ability to work under demanding circumstances
  • Team spirit, self-motivated and a high sense of professionalism

Survey Specialist

ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute (ISEAS) is now accepting applications for Survey Specialist for a duration of two year.

Job Responsibilities:

To develop survey capability in ISEAS research by establishing systems and best practices; develop researcher staff competence in survey work, and manage survey processes through the following:

  • Propose, identify, and implement a new database to deposit ISEAS research products including surveys
  • Work with Director Research Division to lead discussions with Programme Coordinators and Centre Heads to conceptualise and develop survey questionnaires with the aim to collect quality data in an academically and methodologically rigorous manner
  • Develop policies, processes, and statistical databases for data collection, processing, and maintenance of medium or large scale surveys
  • Identify key competency areas and suitable courses in the field of survey and data for research staff to attend
  • Manage survey projects including establishing sources of information, determining sample statistical weighting, procedures to be used, and the design of survey instruments and materials
    • Identify supplementary data sources and initiate measures to study the wider implications of analysis outcomes
    • Identify and mitigate survey related cognitive biases and research limitations
    • Prepare survey data, including tables, graphs, and fact sheets, for clear and effective presentation
    • Create relevant statistical content for data users by employing suitable tools, including data visualisation, machine learning
    • Undertake statistical programming/coding to support analysis

Requirements:

  • Preferably 5 years of relevant experience in data processing, with knowledge in programming software / statistical tools like SAS, Tableau and database querying language such as SQL
  • Knowledge in research methodologies with practical application, as well as statistical concepts and definitions
  • Strong data literacy skills with a keen sense in value of data and translation into actionable analysis
  • Strong inductive and deductive reasoning abilities
  • Keen interest in Southeast Asian affairs
