Mr Andreas Harsono, Indonesia researcher for Human Rights Watch, gave a talk on the issue of tolerance and democracy in Indonesia. In his talk, Mr Harsono shared his travelogue concerning some ethnic and religious violence from Aceh to Papua.

Mr Wan Saiful, the chairman of Malaysia’s National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), gave a seminar to share his views on the challenges which PTPTN currently faces.

 

 

Seminar on “European Business Sentiments and Viewpoints on Regional Trade, Investment Opportunities and EU-ASEAN Relations”

 

Mr. Chris Humphrey, Executive Director of the EU-ASEAN Business Council, presents on the perspective that European industry has towards Southeast Asia. He covers attitudes towards trade and investment in the region, viewpoints on the ASEAN Economic Community, and developments with various trade deals, as well as the EU-ASEAN relationship.

 

 

Seminar on “Transnational PRC Chinese in Bangkok”

 

Dr Lee Kian Cheng, an Assistant Professor in the School of International Affairs of the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration, Chiang Mai University, Thailand, delivered the lecture on the social embeddedness of transnational Chinese from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in Bangkok.

Dr Sri Lestari Wahyoeningroem shares her analysis and assessment on the latest developments in West Papua, and possible considerations to avoid further conflict.

Dr Ernest Chew spoke at a “Heritage of Malaysia and Singapore” seminar series on two prominent Straits Chinese leaders, Sir Song Ong Siang and Sir Tan Cheng Lock.

Dr Ross Tapsell spoke at a Technology and Society seminar series on the rise in fake news or disinformation in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, and its implications on mainstream media and government.

 

 

Seminar on “How to Practise Trance Dance and Survive: The Growth and Place of Jathilan in Yogyakarta”

 

In this seminar, Ms Eva Rapoport discusses Indonesia’s New Order policies regarding crude folk (kasar, rakyat) art forms and how Jathilan, a traditional Javanese horse dance, has grown in popularity in Yogyakarta over the years.

This seminar was organised by the ASEAN Studies Centre at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute, and delivered by Professor Dr. Evelyn S. Devadason, Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Administration, University of Malaya.

Dr Dino Patti Djalal provides an appraisal of Indonesia’s foreign policy in Jokowi’s first term, and also a prognosis of Indonesia’s foreign policy during Jokowi’s second term in this seminar.
