Workshop on “Economic Update for the Riau Islands”

 

Over the past three years, the ISEAS Yusof – Ishak Institute has been studying political, economic, and social trends in this province, with conferences held in 2017 and 2018. This third and final conference will examine: recent developments in the Riau Islands provincial government; evolving policy frameworks to attract foreign direct investment; and opportunities and challenges in three promising sectors for the province’s economy – tourism, shipping and logistics, and the digital economy.

In this seminar, Dr Gaik Cheng Khoo talks about China’s growing appetite for Malaysia’s durians and explores aspects of the Malaysian durian’s identity that differentiates itself from Thai varieties that dominate the global market.

Seminar on “Facilitation of Investment for ASEAN Participation in Global Value Chains (GVCs)”

 

In this seminar, Dr. Mia Mikic talks about the integration of ASEAN member states into GVCs and establishment of regional production networks for the future. She considers the impact of several ongoing developments for AMS, such as: (1) trajectory of traditional GVC growth; (2) technological drivers of changes in division of labour for value chains; and (3) role of policy uncertainty in short and long run.
