“Korea Finds in ASEAN a Like-Minded Partner on the Indo-Pacific” by Hoang Thi Ha

The ASEAN-Republic of Korea (ROK) Commemorative Summit was convened on 25-26 November in Busan to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their dialogue relations. The high-profile event showcased President Moon Jae-in’s strong commitment to bring ASEAN-ROK partnership to a new height under his New Southern Policy (NSP). One key take-away from the Summit is Seoul’s more forthcoming support of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP). Adopted by the ASEAN leaders in June 2019, the AOIP is ASEAN’s response towards the emerging Indo-Pacific discourse. It provides the lens through which ASEAN perceives the Indo-Pacific, anchored in its overriding objective of maintaining regional autonomy and ASEAN centrality.

 

 

Seminar on “China’s Opera Diplomacy and the Chinese Diaspora in 1950s-1960s Bangkok and Singapore”

 

In this seminar, Dr Zhang Beiyu unravels how Chaozhou opera practitioners engaged businessmen in several nodal points (Shantou, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore), struggled to adopt new practices, and formed transnational alliances and networks to carry out the circulations of Chaozhou opera in this turbulent era.

 

 

“Philippine Critical Infrastructure and China” by Malcolm Cook

On 20 November, National Transmission Corporation President Melvin Matibag testified in the Philippine Senate that the State Grid Corporation of China may be able to turn the power off in the Philippines. In 2009, the administration of President Macapagal-Arroyo privatized the national grid monopoly and granted it to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). The State Grid Corporation of China owns 40% of the NGCP and is the single largest owner.*
