Seminar on “The Rohingya Crisis: Background & Security Aspects’’

 

Mr Ye Htut, Visiting Senior Fellow at the ISEAS—Yusof Ishak Institute gave an interesting presentation on the background and context of the Rohingya crisis in northern Rakhine state, bringing out information that is generally not well known.  

 

 

Lecture on “Ancient Medical Industries in Cambodia and the 2017 NSC Archaeological Field School”

 

Since 2011, the NSC Archaeological Field School has worked with regional partners to train participants from East Asia Summit (EAS) member countries in archaeology and its related fields. Field Schools consist of a research project and training components with funding provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore.

 

 

Soft-Launch of ISEAS Library database: EYE OF THE ARCHITECT: THE MADE WIJAYA PHOTOGRAPHIC ARCHIVE

 

This seminar, in part a soft-launch of ISEAS Library database on Made Wijaya’s (alias Michael White) photographic archive, welcomed its four speakers: Dr Hélène Njoto, Visiting Fellow at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute; Mr Soedarmaji Damais, founder and head of Indonesian Arts Cooperation Body (BKKI); Mr Richard Hassell, co-founder of WOHA, and lastly, Professor Adrian Vickers from the University of Sydney who is concurrently a Visiting Fellow at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute.

 

 

Seminar on “Navigating a Highly Protected Market: China’s Chery in Malaysia”

 

In recent years, economic ties between Malaysia and China have strengthened considerably through trade and investment linkages. Of particular interest is the role played by China in the development of Malaysia’s automotive sector. Using the case study of Chinese car maker Chery’s localisation efforts in Malaysia, the speaker, Dr Zhang Miao, offered some riveting insights on this topic.

 

 

Seminar on “Shifting Plantations in the Mekong Borderlands: A Challenge of Chinese Economic Influence in Southeast Asia”

 

Professor Yos Santasombat spoke at a Thailand Studies Programme seminar on the impact of China’s economic regionalism at the Mekong Delta region. 

 

 

Launch of E-Catalogue of The Professor Wang Gungwu Collection at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute

 

Professor Wang donated his personal collection to ISEAS Library in 2010, measuring some 55 linear meters of shelfing space, comprising books, private papers, research articles, diaries, newspaper clippings, photographs, video recordings, among others.

 

 

Seminar on Cambodia’s Political Outlook

 

The Regional Strategic and Political Studies programme at the ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute held a public seminar entitled “Cambodia’s Political Outlook”. The seminar was chaired by ISEAS Senior Fellow Dr. Ian Storey. The seminar was delivered by Dr. Vannarith Chheang.

 

 

The Import of Art: Exhibiting Singapore’s National Development through MoMA’s Visionary Architecture

 

Ms Kathleen Ditzig spoke on “The Import of Art: Exhibiting Singapore’s National Development through MoMA’s Visionary Architecture”. She introduced the exhibition, which featured imaginative, visionary, and idealistic projects from international architects considered too revolutionary to build.

 

 

Indonesia and ASEAN’s Changing Dynamics

 

Dr Marty Natalegawa, Distinguished Fellow of Asia Society Policy Institute and former Minister for Foreign Affairs of Indonesia delivered the ASEAN Lecture on the topic of ‘Indonesia and ASEAN’s Changing Dynamics’.
