Launch of E-Catalogue of The Professor Wang Gungwu Collection at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute

Professor Wang donated his personal collection to ISEAS Library in 2010, measuring some 55 linear meters of shelfing space, comprising books, private papers, research articles, diaries, newspaper clippings, photographs, video recordings, among others.

The e-Catalogue for the private papers of Professor Wang Gungwu, an eminent scholar and historian, and Chairman of ISEAS-Yusof ishak Institute, was launched yesterday. This event organised in conjunction with the ISEAS Library was attended by over 50 scholars, colleagues and friends of Professor Wang. This launch was also held to coincide with Professor Wang’s 87th Birthday.

Professor Wang donated his personal collection to ISEAS Library in 2010, measuring some 55 linear meters of shelfing space, comprising books, private papers, research articles, diaries, newspaper clippings, photographs, video recordings, among others. Yesterday’s event was meant to launch the catalogue which serves as reference tool to the collection.
The session opened with Dr Leo Suryadinata followed by a slideshow which provided a glimpse into the entire collection of the papers held at the ISEAS Library. This was then followed by a presentation by Mr Gao Jiankang, Research Officer at ISEAS.

Dr Leo Suryadinata, ISEAS Senior Visiting Fellow, spoke on Professor Wang’s key research works and his influence in the academic and community at large while Mr Gao Jiankang, ISEAS Research Officer, presented his findings while helping the Library to sort and arrange the collection, that Prof Wong was an aspiring poet before he became a historian.

Researchers who wish to consult the materials can approach the Library Reference and Circulation counter at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute. Unpublished private papers will be selectively digitized for online access in the coming years before releasing for access.
