NEW DIRECTOR FOR ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE

Mr Tan Chin Tiong will step down as Director of ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute (ISEAS) on 14 January 2018, after being at the helm of ISEAS since March 2012. 

Mr Choi Shing Kwok will succeed Mr Tan as Director of ISEAS on 15 January 2018. Mr Choi was Director, Security and Intelligence Division, Ministry of Defence from 1995 to 2005. He was subsequently appointed Permanent Secretary (Transport) from 2005 to 2012 and Permanent Secretary (Environment and Water Resources) from July 2012 to October 2017. 

Acknowledging Mr Tan’s contributions, Chairman of ISEAS Board of Trustees Professor Wang Gungwu said: “Chin Tiong has provided strong management leadership to ISEAS for almost 6 years. He has transformed the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute’s research structure, giving it a stronger focus and synergy that channelled its scholars to research on core contemporary issues and subjects and produce well-informed analysis of regional events.  I am glad he is staying on in ISEAS as Senior Advisor to continue to make a contribution to the Institute’s work.   I also extend a warm welcome to Shing Kwok to ISEAS.  I am confident that he will be able to further strengthen ISEAS as a leading research centre on Southeast Asian studies.  The Institute looks forward to working with him”.

The ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, established by the Government in 1968, is a regional research centre dedicated to the study of socio-political, security and economic trends and developments in Southeast Asia and its wider geostrategic and economic environment. The Institute aims to stimulate research and debate within scholarly circles, enhance awareness of the region, and facilitate the search for viable solutions to the varied problems confronting the region. It also strives to nurture a community of scholars interested in the study of the region.
