Over 40 students from Syracuse University attended a 2-day Outreach Programme for University Students (OPUS) Lecture Series, now in its 7th run, at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute on 22 August 2016.

DAY ONE

Monday, 22 August 2016 – ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute hosted the Outreach Programme for University Students (OPUS) Lecture Series with Syracuse University, now in its 7th year. The 3-hour session (Day 1) was attended by 42 Syracuse University students and accompanied by two staff members Ms Joffre Yuk Sim Chan, Director and Academic Coordinator of Syracuse University Abroad Program in Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, and Ms Josette Li, Program Manager, Syracuse University Abroad Program in Hong Kong, Syracuse University Hong Kong.

Prior to the learning journey in Singapore, the delegation had earlier visited Beijing, Kuala Lumpur and Melaka.

Dr Malcolm Cook, ISEAS Senior Fellow, Regional Strategic and Political Studies Programme, and Ms Moe Thuzar, ISEAS Fellow & Lead Researcher (Socio-Cultural Affairs), ASEAN Studies Centre and Co-coordinator, Myanmar Studies Programme, led their lectures on Southeast Asia’s Limited Relations with China and Emerging Myanmar respectively.

During the second session right after the tea-break, the students were given an overview of the ASEAN Economic Community by Ms Evelyn Ooi Peiqi, Research Associate from the Regional Economic Studies Programme at ISEAS. Mr Kenneth Poon Jian Li, Research Associate of the Regional Social and Cultural Studies Programme, delivered the final lecture on multi-culturalism in Singapore (Day 1).

Wednesday, 24 August 2016 – Dr Termsak Chalermpalanupap, ISEAS Fellow and Lead Researcher (Political & Security Affairs), ASEAN Studies Centre, kicked off Day 2 by presenting his lecture on ASEAN and the US-China Rivalry: Challenges and Opportunities from the ASEAN perspective. Dr Siwage Dharma Negara, ISEAS Fellow, Regional Economic Studies, then focused on the ASEAN-China Economic Relations. Dr Siwage shared about the key challenges in bilateral trade and investment relations between ASEAN and China.

The students were also exposed to the contemporary political developments in Malaysia for the final session which was presented by ISEAS Fellow, Dr Norshahril Saat. For both days, students actively engaged ISEAS researchers in a lively discussion after each presentation. Before their departure from the institute, the delegation from Syracuse University took a group photo with the speakers to mark their successful completion of the 7th Outreach Programme for University Students (OPUS) Lecture Series with ISEAS.
