ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute (ISEAS) is a regional research centre dedicated to the study of socio-political, security and economic trends and developments in Southeast Asia and its wider geostrategic and economic environment.

The institute offers the Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellow programme, as well as adhoc opportunities for visiting fellowships on special projects.

Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows Programme

 

The Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows Programme honours Professor Wang Gungwu, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute (ISEAS) for his distinguished tenure of 17 years and for his key contributions in nurturing a strong culture of research excellence at ISEAS.

The programme aims to build the next generation of scholars and policy makers exploring the nexus of big-power relations and its impact on Southeast Asia, through policy relevant and contemporary research on international politics and security, regional economics and digital technology, in the following priority areas of research:

  • Developments in US-China relations and their impact on Southeast Asia
  • Asia Pacific security issues (e.g. South China Sea, China-ASEAN relations)
  • Progress and prospects of global/regional economic cooperation initiatives
    (e.g. Belt and Road Initiative and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership)
  • Rise of China and its impact on Southeast Asian communities
  • Use of digital media and technology by countries to further their interests and influence perceptions in Southeast Asian countries

Fellowships may be for a minimum of two (2) months, up to a period of six (6) months, subject to approval by ISEAS. Successful applicants are expected to be in residence at ISEAS for the duration of their fellowship.

Expected Outputs and Publication Opportunities

Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows (WGWVF) are required to contribute to ISEAS Perspective and Fulcrum publications in the areas of their research and speak at an in-house seminar on their research findings during their fellowship at ISEAS. As WGWVF, researchers will be part of a network of regional scholars and are welcome to contribute to ISEAS after their fellowship.

Stipend and Benefits

  • The Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows Programme offers successful applicants a fixed monthly stipend (inclusive of a housing subsidy) for the duration of their fellowship at ISEAS and round-trip economy airfare between their home base and Singapore.
  • As a Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellow, you will be invited to a meeting with Professor Wang Gungwu during your fellowship.
  • Successful applicants will enjoy access to office space, computer equipment and IT services, ISEAS Library and other facilities at ISEAS, where appropriate.
  • Proposals for partial/full cost-sharing will also be considered.

Eligibility

The Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows Programme is intended for post-doctoral research fellows and mid-career policymakers.

For mid-career policymakers, we welcome applicants who may not have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, provided that their CV/Resume can ascertain an appropriate level of professional experience and research interest.

Application period for the 2025 intake: 6 May – 2 August 2024.

  • Research Statement (3 pages, double-spaced) addressing:
    1. Area of research, research methodology, timeline, and expected outputs
    2. Duration of fellowship in residence at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute

ISEAS PhD Scholarship

 

ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute is inviting PhD scholarship applications for the following areas of study:

Economics, History, Political Science, International Relations, Sociology, Anthropology, and other relevant social sciences subjects

Terms of Award

  • The scholarship is tenable at reputable universities overseas or in Singapore
  • Tuition and other compulsory fees
  • Monthly maintenance allowance
  • Conference/Fieldwork allowance
  • Medical insurance
  • Return air passage (if applicable)
  • Preliminary expenses
  • Successful candidates will serve a five-year bond with ISEAS following the completion of their studies

Eligibility

  • Singapore citizens only;
  • Have consistently good academic records;
  • Be prepared to carry out applied and policy-related research on Southeast Asia.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have already been accepted for admission into reputable universities.

K S Sandhu Graduate Scholarship

 

The ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute offers K.S. Sandhu Graduate Scholarships to pursue the master degree programme at a Singapore university. These scholarships are awarded in the fields of Sociology, Anthropology, Geography, History, Southeast Asian Studies, Political Science, International Relations or Economics.

This scholarship is funded by the K.S. Sandhu Memorial Fund, Singapore.


K.S. Sandhu Graduate Scholarship 2024

ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute invites M.A. scholarship applications for the following areas of study at a Singapore university

Geographic Information Systems, Statistics, Data Science and Analytics, Data Visualisation or Economics

Terms of Awards:

• Each scholarship is tenable for one-year full-time study at a reputable university in Singapore
• Monthly stipend
• Tuition and other compulsory fees
• Successful candidates will be attached to ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute as a Graduate Student Assistant during his/her term of study (up to 8 hours per week), and upon completion of studies will serve a one-year bond as a Research Associate with the Institute.

Eligibility:

Candidates should:
(a) Be Singapore citizens or permanent residents;
(b) Be in possession of a good honours degree (or professional qualifications of equivalent standing) in a relevant subject; and
(c) Have consistently good academic records.

Requirements

Candidates who have already obtained university admission for 2024 and meet the above requirements are also eligible to apply. Applicants should submit a cover letter, full CV, two letters of reference, educational certificates and transcripts, a research proposal and a statement of purpose in pursuing the MA degree, and a passport-sized photograph.

Tun Dato Sir Cheng-Lock Tan MA Scholarship

 

The Tun Dato Sir Cheng-Lock Tan MA Scholarship supports local students with the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies in Southeast Asian Studies, Political Science & International Relations, Economics, Sociology, Anthropology, History, Geography, Archaeology/Archaeological Science and other relevant subjects.

The Scholarship, funded by The Tun Dato Sir Cheng Lock Tan Trust Fund, is offered on an annual basis and administered by ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute.


TUN DATO SIR CHENG-LOCK TAN M.A. SCHOLARSHIPS 2024

ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute invites M.A. scholarship applications for the following areas of study:
