Vietnam’s Foreign Policy in the Re-making: Towards the 13th Communist Party Congress

About the Seminar 

In early 2021, the 13th Communist Party Congress will be held. Against this backdrop, discussions about the continuity and change in Vietnam’s foreign policy have started in earnest. This talk will provide an initial evaluation of foreign policy implementation under the 12th Congress tenure with a focus on the main directions in Vietnam’s foreign policy and Vietnam’s relations with the main partners such as ASEAN, China and the United States. The talk also examines future trends in Vietnam’s foreign policy that the Congress is expected to adopt.

About the Speaker

Dr. Nguyen Vu Tung joined the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, (DAV) in 1990. From July 2010 and January 2014, he was Deputy Chief of Mission at the Vietnam Embassy in the United States. He is now DAV President. He earned the Degree of Master of Arts in Laws and Diplomacy (MALD) from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1998 and obtained a Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University in 2003. His main areas of teaching, research, and publications include international relations theories, international relations in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific, Vietnam’s foreign policy and its relations with the United States, China, and ASEAN.
