The world enters 2023 with major geopolitical and economic uncertainties, including the raging war in Ukraine, intensifying tensions between the United States and China, and high inflation in most countries. Slowing global economic growth is therefore becoming increasingly evident, putting pressures on the economic prospects of Vietnam, one of the most open economies in Asia. To complicate matters further, the country is also navigating through a credit crunch as the government tightens its monetary policy and takes measures to cool down the real estate sector and clean up the corporate bond market. However, there may also be tailwinds from the gradual reopening of China, Vietnam’s most important economic partner.
This webinar will analyse Vietnam’s economic challenges and opportunities in 2023 and what investors should watch out for. It will also discuss the measures that the Vietnamese government should take to deal with the global headwinds and domestic challenges in the year ahead.
About the Speaker
Tuan Ho is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Accounting and Finance of the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and a former Visiting Fellow at the Vietnam Studies Programme of the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore. He is also a member of the Board of Advisors of the Vietnam Wealth Advisers (VWA) and the Director of the Masters in Accounting and Finance Programme at the University of Bristol.
Tuan’s main research interest is investment analysis, financial markets, and economic development of ASEAN countries. His research has been published in reputable academic journals such as Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, Accounting and Business Research, British Accounting Review, Accounting and Finance, International Review of Financial Analysis, and Australian Economic Papers. He is also a regular contributor to Vietnamese business newspapers and magazines, such as Vietnam Investment Review, The Saigon Times, Saigon Investment & Finance, and VnEconomy. Before joining the academia, Tuan was Chief Economist and Senior Analyst at Rong Viet Securities Company.
