Vietnam’s Banking Reforms: Treading Water from Global Financial Crisis to Covid-19 Pandemic
VIETNAM STUDIES PROGRAMME WEBINAR
About the Webinar
In the wake of the 2007-09 Global Financial Crisis, Vietnam decided in 2011 to embark on an overhaul of its banking system to mitigate system risks, improve the resilience of the banking system, and support sustainable economic growth. These reforms have been focused on three key areas: implementing Basel II standards at selected banks, improving commercial banks’ capital adequacy and liquidity, and digitalizing the banking system. However, these reform efforts have been complicated by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic since the early 2020. The pandemic has slowed progress in these reforms, while threatening to create new problems such as the resurgence of non-performing loans and the increasing opaqueness of asset quality. This webinar will examine the achievements as well as the shortcomings of Vietnam’s banking reforms since 2011. It will also discuss the prospects of forthcoming reforms and their implications for investors in the next five years.
