REGIONAL ECONOMIC STUDIES PROGRAMME WEBINAR

About the Webinar

Penang, with over 50 years of industrial experience, has built a reputation as an established manufacturing hub for key promoted industries, especially for the electrical and electronics (E&E) industry. The State has also experienced diversification in its industrial activities, with one major segment being the medical devices manufacturing, and is now emerging as a destination with among the highest concentration of medical devices companies in Southeast Asia. Penang has established itself as a destination of choice for the orthopaedics and cardiovascular product segment. Analysing value chain and industry mapping of companies and an industry at the state level (or sub-national level) present challenges in terms of scarcity of data and how available information can be analysed. This webinar discusses the current state of the manufacturing product segment and value chain in Penang’s medical devices industry, its evolvement over time, different sub-segments (Disposables, Surgical Instruments, Therapeutic, Diagnostic Equipment) in the industry, and linkages among different related industries (electronics components or parts, metal-based, plastic-based, and rubber-based industries).
