About the Seminar

There has been much commentary in the international media on the present Rohingya crisis in Myanmar. In this seminar Mr Ye Htut will give a briefing on the background to the Rohingya issue and its security aspects, bringing out features of the situation which may not be widely known. This may in part help to explain the attitude of most Myanmar people and politicians to the Rohingya issue.

About the Speaker

Ye Htut is a Visiting Senior Fellow at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute. He attended the Myanmar Defence Services Academy class 22 in 1977 and graduated in 1981. He served as infantry officer and staff officer in many counter-insurgency operations in Kayin and Kachin states. In 2005, he was transferred to Ministry of Information (MOI) and appointed as Deputy Director-General at the Information and Public Relations Department. He became Director General in 2009, Deputy Minister of Information in 2012 in the Thein Sein government and was appointed as spokesperson of President Thein Sein in 2013. He became Minister for Information in 2014 and also continued to serve as spokesperson. He retired on March 30 2016 after President Thein Sein hand over power to newly elected President Htin Kyaw in the Aung San Suu Kyi administration.
