The Recently-Concluded Parliamentary Session: A Participant’s Observations

MALAYSIA STUDIES PROGRAMME WEBINAR

About the Webinar

Malaysia experienced a spike in COVID-19 cases less than a month after the Perikatan Nasional coalition took power from the former ruling coalition, Pakatan Harapan. Following this, parliamentary sessions were suspended and only resumed on 13 July, lasting until 27 August.

During this period, a number of motions and bills were passed, but not without incurring significant controversy. To cope with the abrupt change in the ruling coalition and the COVID-19 pandemic, there were some very detailed changes on the parliamentary agenda that helped the administration of the day.

An additional element added to the intensity of the proceedings. The majority of MPs from Pakatan Harapan are not unfamiliar with sitting on the opposition bench. However, this was perhaps the first time that some MPs from PAS and Perikatan Nasional sat at the front bench. The former were able to grill the latter with the inside knowledge they gained during their recently-concluded tenure in government.

In this webinar, YB Wong will unpack the July parliamentary seating and the political dynamics of both coalitions.
