The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Future of Research and Development in Indonesia

INDONESIA STUDIES PROGRAMME WEBINAR

In April 2021, Indonesia established the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) as an independent state body to overhaul research conducted by government bodies and universities. This establishment of an over-arching research institution marks a new era for science and innovation in Indonesia, in which scientists are expected to contribute more to economic development.

The President has tasked BRIN to ensure that research and development activities in the country could attract more investments to its science and technology sectors. BRIN will also play a role as a “facilitator and enabler” for higher education institutions and the industrial sector to develop their research and innovation capabilities.

This webinar will provide insights on the rationale for BRIN’s establishment, the challenges faced by Indonesia to build a more conducive environment for research and technological development, and BRIN’s strategy to respond to those challenges. It will also discuss the implications of research re-organization on future research collaboration with foreign researchers.
