The Growth of Indonesia’s E-commerce and Fintech sector amidst the Covid-19 pandemic

REGIONAL ECONOMIC STUDIES PROGRAMME

About the Webinar

This webinar will present and discuss recent e-commerce and fintech trends as well as their impacts on changing consumer spending patterns and the rise of borrowings from market segments not usually touched by the traditional banking sector. The first segment of the webinar will start with a brief overview on the extent and effectivity of the country’s broadband footprint and network. This will be followed by an assessment of the growth and nature of e-commerce pre-pandemic and currently in the ongoing pandemic environment. This segment will also cover changes in the make-up of e-commerce consumers, the changing mix of goods and services purchased, changes to the portfolio of suppliers that are relying on e-commerce- either by doing it alone or through the rapidly growing e-commerce platforms and finally, the different payment methods used from cash and credit/debit cards to e-payment services. The presentation will close with a look at trends going forward and what we could expect in a post-pandemic world.

The second segment will be looking at two fintech grouping of companies. One is the e-payment companies, like go-pay and OVO, and the other is the e-lending companies. Growth trends of these fintech segments will be assessed and more would be discussed in terms of how it has impacted the banking landscape as well as their responses to these impacts thus far. Issues relating to this segment such as regulatory changes, the rise of illegal fintechs (which have hurt the industry’s reputation), the rise of problem loans and market consolidation will be assessed as well. This segment will close with broader financial industry trends going forward as fintechs grow and challenge the more established banks in Indonesia.
