The Future of Golkar and Indonesian Politics

INDONESIA STUDIES PROGRAMME SEMINAR

About the Seminar

Golongan Karya (Party of the Functional Groups, or Golkar) has been a force in Indonesian politics since its establishment in 1971. Its durability in Indonesian politics is remarkable, with its party members continuing to occupy important positions in the political establishment long after the fall of President Suharto and the beginning of Reformasi in 1998. However, Golkar has of late experienced headwinds, especially with its leader, Parliament Speaker Setya Novanto, facing corruption charges stemming from the national e-KTP (electronic identity card) programme. Golkar’s next steps will be crucial, especially with the preparations for the all-important 2019 national legislative and presidential elections beginning in earnest next year. The seminar will discuss the ongoing internal dynamics within Golkar Party, and Indonesia’s domestic political landscape as the 2019 Indonesian presidential election approaches.
