About the Lecture
In a world and region marked by complex tectonic geopolitical and geo-economic shifts and by disruptive change brought by ever-accelerating pace of technological innovations, how can ASEAN secure and, indeed, assert its continued relevance? How can ASEAN maintain and build-on its past achievements in transforming relations between countries of Southeast Asia, from one marked by “trust deficit” to “strategic trust”; in changing the position of Southeast Asian countries in the wider region, from pawns in direct major powers’ rivalries to one of “centrality”; and in advancing a more people-centered ASEAN? The Lecture will discuss some of these questions. It will highlight the need for ASEAN to manage and address the complex nexus between the national and international domains, between Southeast Asia’s and the wider region’s dynamic, and the convergence between political-strategic and broader economic and social issues. The Lecture will highlight the need for ASEAN to maintain its transformative outlook for it to secure and assert its future relevance as well.
The Lecture will be followed by a launch of Dr. Marty Natalegawa’s publication on ASEAN titled Does ASEAN Matter? A View from Within. The book is published by ISEAS Publishing in July 2018.
About the Speaker
Dr. Marty Natalegawa served as Foreign Minister of Indonesia between 2009-2014, capping some three-decade experience in diplomacy, serving among others as Permanent Representative to the UN; Ambassador to the Court of St. James’ and to Ireland; Director-General for ASEAN Cooperation; Director for International Organizations; Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chief of Staff. Currently he is inter alia serving as member of the UN Secretary General’s High Level Advisory Board on Mediation; the UN President of the General Assembly’s Team of external Advisors; Prominent Research Scholar of the Bank of Indonesia Institute; Asia Society Policy Institute Distinguished Fellow; member of the International Academic Advisory Committee of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies; the Southeast Asia Advisory Board of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS – Washington, D.C.); and the International Crisis Group Board of Trustees. Dr. Natalegawa earned a Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil.) degree from the Australian National University; a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree from the Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge; and a BSc (Hons) from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is the author of a book on ASEAN titled Does ASEAN Matter? A View from Within (ISEAS Publishing, July 2018).
