Sketch by Sketch with Zunar – A Visual Satire of Malaysian Administrations Over Time

About the Webinar

Far from images effortlessly appearing on blank pieces of paper, the process of creating visual satire is a time-consuming and painstaking process. Ideas need to be expressed visually and subsequently refined reiteratively. Initial concepts at the sketching stage may well emerge transformed at the end of the process. This is all the more the case when the artist seeks to comment on complex and fast-changing issues in an accessible and engaging way.

In this webinar, Zunar, one of Malaysia’s foremost cartoonists, will share with us the philosophy, craft, and technique of his art. Based on three cartoons picked from the past three Malaysian administrations, he will share with us his initial idea, and then his method for refining each of the works. In doing so, we will gain a glimpse of Zunar’s creative process as well as his thoughts on key political developments in the country.
