Pakatan Harapan’s Hold in Selangor

MALAYSIA STUDIES PROGRAMME WEBINAR

About the Webinar

When the Pakatan Harapan (PH) federal government fell in February 2020, PH also lost Johor, Malacca, Perak and Kedah, while in Sabah, PH-aligned Warisan was replaced by the PN-aligned United Alliance of Sabah. PH has maintained its hold on three states, Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan.

Selangor’s position is of unique interest, given the largest share of PH assemblypersons comprising members from the People’s Justice Party, PKR, the party which has faced significant elite splits in 2020.

This webinar will examine the underlying factors that account for PH’s survival in Selangor despite tremendous political change at the national level. In order to do that, it will look at voting trends in the state, Selangor’s demographic characteristics, and PH’s track record in government since 2008.

From there, the webinar will look forward. The 2020 political realignment, public opinion towards the ruling Perikatan Nasional administration and the 2018 redelineation exercise which created more Malay-majority seats may hamper PH’s ability to maintain its strong margin. The political fragmentation that continues to unfold will surely see further party and coalitional realignment, which will invariably impact PH’s strength in the state of Selangor.
