Ongoing Challenges of COVID-19 for ASEAN: Quantitative Analyses and Policy Responses

About the Webinar

The widespread downturn in ASEAN from the pandemic has triggered economic and social shocks that are expected to last into 2021 and potentially even beyond. This webinar will present key findings of the 2021 edition of the OECD Economic Outlook for Southeast Asia, China and India and discuss the importance of reallocating resources to digitalisation in response to Covid-19 pandemic, together with prominent speakers from Asia. In particular, the webinar will highlight how to measure the impact of COVID-19 and some policy options for improving the effectiveness of health, monetary and fiscal policy responses in the region by using quantitative analyses. The development of digital health and e-learning, together with Industry 4.0 during the pandemic will be discussed. The webinar will zoom in on these developments and focus on areas where more policy work is necessary.

About the Speakers

Kensuke Tanaka is Head of the Asia Desk at the OECD Development Centre. He initiated and is in charge of several publications including the biannual flagship publication ”OECD Economic Outlook for Southeast Asia, China and India”. He also constructed the Medium-term Projection Framework to serve the forecasts for the Outlook. The Outlook is regularly presented at the occasion of the ASEAN/East Asia Summit. He also started the periodical “This Quarter in Asia” (2010-13) and the “Revenue statistics for Asian countries” (2012-19). More recently, he published “Road and Rail Infrastructure in Asia” (2018) and “Innovation for Water Infrastructure Development in Mekong region” (2020). Previously, he taught at Sciences Po, France and held lectures at various universities in Japan and Emerging Asia. He has published articles in the fields of development / international finance and macroeconomic/public policy in Asia.

About the Discussant

Naoyuki Yoshino is Professor Emeritus at Keio University and former Dean of the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI). Prof. Yoshino’s professional career includes membership in numerous government committees. He has served as Director of the Japan Financial Services Agency’s (FSA) Financial Research Center (FSA Institute), Chair of the Financial Planning Standards Board, Chair of the Japanese Ministry of Finance’s Council on Foreign Exchange and its Fiscal System Council, Board Member of the Deposit Insurance Corporation of Japan and President of the Financial System Council of the Government of Japan. He is currently a visiting professor at GRIPS and visiting Lecturer at University of Tokyo.
