ISEAS PHILIPPINES PROJECT SEMINAR

About the Seminar

2019 was a critical year for the future of Muslim Mindanao and its relationship with the National Government. On the positive side, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), a much stronger regional government with a larger population than its predecessor, was established by plebiscite with strong popular support across most of Muslim Mindanao. On a more worrying note, the rehabilitation of Marawi City, the only Islamic city in the Philippines and home to the Maranao community, progressed very slowly to the disappointment of the many thousands internally displaced still living in temporary accommodation.

2020 promises to be no less important. Our speaker will discuss how it is a crucial year for the development of nascent BARMM government in the run-up to the inaugural 2022 elections with a raft of vital legislation needing to be passed and implemented. And for the rehabilitation of Marawi City, as if we continue to see more tunnel than light, local alienation from the national government and its rehabilitation task force will mount, aggravating concerns about the attraction of violent extremist groups to alienated locals.

This seminar is supported by the Embassy of the Philippines, Singapore.
