Malaysia’s Pakatan Harapan One Year On: Challenges and Outlook

About the Seminar

It has been over one year since the fall of Barisan Nasional and the formation of the Pakatan Harapan government in Malaysia. The euphoria of “New Malaysia” has receded and the realities of administering Malaysia’s complex web of politics, economic constraints, and competing interests has trimmed expectations. This has given rise to a perception of a government that may have bitten off more than it can chew. At the same time, the forces of the Opposition UMNO and PAS are consolidating and have been mobilizing public opinion, and raising doubts among supporters. Merdeka Center has been tracking public perceptions and attitudes about the New Malaysia and will discuss the challenges and possible outcomes given the known facts and insights from key players in Malaysian politics.
