Malaysia and the Youths: MUDA’S Mobilization Efforts

MALAYSIA STUDIES PROGRAMME WEBINAR

About the Webinar

‘Old tactics, same faces, cast-off politicians, back and forth excuses, and collapsing systems’ are among grumbles that one can think of when we talk about Malaysian politics since GE14 in 2018. The gleam of hope that appeared when citizens unite to topple down the Barisan National regime disappeared with the Sheraton Move earlier this year, plunging Malaysia into endless political crises.

Issues such as corruption, lack of equal access to education, job loss and furloughed employees, human rights issues, and the clashes between liberalism and conservatism continue to haunt Malaysia. As such, Malaysian youths are increasingly fatigued and frustrated with the status quo. The abovementioned issues further rendered stunted Malaysian youths. Refused to dance to the music, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s former Minister for Youth and Sports, formed a new party, the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA), inspired by the Future Forward party in Thailand and La République En Marche under Emmanuel Macron in France. The idea is to showcase talented and young political candidates of various age groups and ideologies. This new movement – MUDA – is gaining traction, as seen in the 10,000 pledges it garnered thus far.

This webinar presents the young man behind MUDA, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and his efforts to galvanize Malaysian youths to join politics. Youngsters from civil societies and professionals are joining him in a bid to create history, to change and rejuvenate Malaysia’s politics. Will MUDA be the game changer badly needed or will the party plummet to its own demise?
