Kelantan under PAS Administration

MALAYSIA STUDIES PROGRAMME

About the Webinar

The Islamic party Parti Islam Se Malaysia (PAS) has ruled the state of Kelantan from 1959-1977 and 1990 to the present. During much of this period, the Kelantan state government was in opposition. Under Barisan Nasional rule, this implied reduced financial support from the federal government for the state administration as well as reduced revenues from petroleum extracted within Kelantan’s territorial waters. However, PAS successfully retained control of the state government. Even when the rest of Malaysia was swept by change in the 2018 general election, Kelantan bucked the national trend and remained with PAS. Thus, despite being politically and economically disadvantaged, PAS has been dominant in the state.

This webinar will explore the factors that have helped PAS maintain its political power in Kelantan. This involves: analysing how the party portrays itself as the steward of the state’s economy and polity; understanding how it chooses to relate to other political parties, not least UMNO; and evaluating the performance of PAS’s opposition in Kelantan. This webinar will also assess the electoral potential of PAS and other political parties in the state as they prepare for the upcoming general election.
