Is UMNO in trouble in Johor?

MALAYSIA STUDIES PROGRAMME SEMINAR

About the Seminar

Malaysia must hold her 14th general election before mid-August 2018.  Many are predicting that the period between February to May 2018 is the most likely time.  As political parties prepare for GE14, the dynamics among Malaysia’s Malay political parties are becoming more heated, especially with the recent birth of two new contenders. Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) is a splinter of the Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS) that was launched in September 2015.  And Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) is a splinter from UMNO that was launched in January 2017. Both are working together in the Pakatan Harapan coalition, with the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and the People’s Justice Party (PKR). Together, they are claiming that they have a good chance to win in the southern state of Johor, which is traditionally seen as the bastion of UMNO. Is this claim realistic? Is UMNO really under threat in Johor?  In this seminar, the speaker will outline the findings from his fieldwork in Johor between March and August this year, with a focus on the potential performance of the two new parties.
