Digital Trends Altering Indonesia’s Banking Landscape

REGIONAL ECONOMIC STUDIES PROGRAMME

About the Webinar

The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the digital transformation of the banking landscape worldwide, including in Indonesia. The recent failures of the Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Signature Bank in the US highlighted how the vulnerability of banks could be exacerbated by digital connectivity through the acceleration of bank runs.

This webinar will focus on how digital technologies have changed Indonesia’s banking sector including the emergence of fintechs and digital-licensed banks which are challenging larger conventional banks. The webinar will explore how digital technologies improve the ease and accessibility of undertaking financial transactions but may also bring about new risks to the industry. The webinar will also discuss why these emerging risks necessitate a regulatory framework that tries to balance between a light oversight approach during the early growth stages and the tighter rulings that follow as the new entrants mature. Finally, the webinar will explore how managers across the different segments such as conventional banks, digital-licensed banks and fintechs, are coping with these challenges as well as taking advantage of rising new opportunities.
