‘Community of Shared Destiny for Mankind’: Remaking the World in China’s Image

REGIONAL STRATEGIC AND POLITICAL STUDIES PROGRAMME

About the Seminar

The seminar will review the origins, purposes, and determinants for the future prospects of President Xi Jinping’s signature initiative to build a “Community of Shared Destiny for Mankind” – a new type of global community that would complement Xi’s “China Dream” of fostering “the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation”. Through the ‘Community of Shared Destiny” discourse, Beijing has been proactively mobilising broad international support for China-led global governance norms and institutions that compete with and would potentially replace the current liberal rules-based order. The Chinese vision of global governance is taking shape through three key vehicles, namely the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the Global Development Initiative (GDI), and the recently launched Global Security Initiative (GSI). The seminar will also unpack Southeast Asia’s roles in these Chinese initiatives and the priority accorded by Beijing to the region as an important building-block in the construction of a new China-centred global community.
