Coalitions, Kingmakers, and Electoral Platforms: Assessing the Critical Issues Behind the 2024 Indonesian Elections

INDONESIA STUDIES PROGRAMME

About the Hybrid Seminar

In 2024, Indonesia will hold national elections for its president and vice president, national parliament (DPR), regional representatives (DPD), and regional parliaments (DPRD). This simultaneous election will be a real test for Indonesian democracy, which, to some observers, has been seen as declining in recent years. The upcoming elections will feature a new generation of political leaders competing for key positions in the country’s political arena. Three pairs of candidates have registered with the Elections Commission (KPU), and party coalitions have become clearer. The candidates will soon start campaigning and debating to gain public support. Several issues may affect the direction and outcomes of the elections, including identity politics, Joko Widodo’s support, as well as the support from the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the biggest Muslim organisation in Indonesia. This seminar will examine emerging political personalities in terms of their background, political ideology and cultural outlook; campaign strategies of candidates and political parties; and the relevance of ethnic and religious faultlines. The speaker will highlight some critical issues behind the upcoming elections, which may influence the outcome.
