China’s ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ and Host Countries’ Bargaining Power in Southeast Asia: What are Enabling Conditions?

REGIONAL ECONOMIC STUDIES PROGRAMME SEMINAR

About the Seminar

‘Belt and Road Initiative’ (BRI) has been characterized by power asymmetry between China and host countries. Failure or pitfall has often been blamed on weaker, ‘co-opted’ recipient governments. Yet, based on cases from Southeast Asia, this webinar presents that host countries do have some agency to shape BRI projects to meet their needs and reduce adverse impacts. The webinar discusses enabling conditions related to investment and aid policies, internal politics, political opportunism, and civil society.
