ASEAN and Southeast Asia’s Relations with China: Moving with the Times
About the Seminar
The seminar will review of ASEAN’s and Southeast Asia’s relations with China which have advanced greatly over the years. It will in particular seek to answer the following questions: How does one carry the relationship forward in the future to new heights? What are the incentives to do so and what are the pitfalls the two sides need to bear in mind and overcome?
About the Speakers
Zhu Feng is currently Executive Director of China Center for Collaborative Studies of the South China Sea, Nanjing University. He is also Director of the Institute of International Studies at Nanjing University. He writes extensively on regional security in East Asia, the nuclear issue in North Korea, China-US military and diplomatic relations. As a leading Chinese security expert, Professor Zhu’s recent books include International Relations Theory and East Asian Security (2007), China-Japan Security Cooperation and Defense Communication: the Past, Present, and Future (Co-edited with Prof Akiyama Asahiro, Tokyo), and America, China and the Struggle for the World Order (co-edited with Prof G. John Ikenbery and Prof Wang Jisi). He sits on a couple of editorial boards of scholarly journals, consults independently for the Chinese government and the private sector, and comments frequently on television and radio and in the print media on Chinese foreign affairs and security policy. Professor Zhu began his undergraduate studies at the Department of International Politics at Peking University in 1981 and received his Ph.D. from Peking University in 1991.
Xue Li is Professor and Director of Department of International Strategy, Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). He did his PhD in International Politics at Graduate School of CASS in 2007. His research interests are China’s foreign policy and China’s regional strategy in the Eurasia Continent. In the past four years, he has written frequently on the “One Belt and One Road” (OBOR) Strategy and the South China Sea (SCS) dispute. He published two books in May 2016, Structuralism and International Relations Theory: Change and Innovation, a revision of his PHD dissertation; OBOR and the coming of Eurasia Era, a collection of his writings on OBOR. He has also published an edited another book in 2017: OBOR: Perspectives from Different Countries. Dr Xue has published numerous articles in China’s leading academic journals. He has also written op-eds in the Chinese and foreign press, such as Financial Times (Chinese version), the Diplomat (English version), China Daily (English version), Global Times (Chinese version and English Version), United Morning (Lian He Zao Bao, Chinese version published in Singapore) and China Review (Chinese version published in Hong Kong).
Dewi Fortuna Anwar straddles the world of academia, political activism and government. She is a Research Professor at the Center for Political Studies-Indonesian Institute of Sciences and was the Deputy Chairman for Social Sciences and Humanities-LIPI from 2001 to 2010. Presently she is Distinguished Visiting Professor at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Singapore. Between October 2010 and May 2015 Dewi served as Deputy Secretary for Political Affairs, and from May 2015 to February 2017 as Deputy for Government Policy Support to Vice President Boediono and Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla of the Republic of Indonesia respectively. In 1998-99 Dewi served as Assistant Minister of State Secretariat for Foreign Affairs during the Habibie Presidency. In 2015 Dewi was appointed a member of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI). She has written widely on Indonesia’s foreign policy, Indonesia’s democratization as well as on ASEAN and regional political and security issues. Dewi is also the Chairman of the Institute for Democracy and Human Rights, The Habibie Center, a private think-tank based in Jakarta, a member of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters in 2008-2012. She obtained her PhD from Monash University, Melbourne in 1990, while her M.A. and B.A. (Hons) were from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London in 1982 and 1981 respectively.
Daljit Singh is a Senior Research Fellow at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore and the Coordinator of the Institute’s Regional Strategic and Political Studies. His current research interests at ISEAS include the major powers in Southeast Asia, regional security trends and the regional security architecture. He has edited or co-edited several books on security-related subjects, written book chapters and articles, and contributed opinion pieces in the local and international press. He is also the editor of Southeast Asian Affairs, the annual review of Southeast Asia published by ISEAS. Daljit earlier career was in the Singapore public service where he was a senior official in the Ministry of Defence and then in the Ministry of Information and Communications. He was educated at the University of Singapore (BA Hons in Philosophy) and the University of Oxford (Politics, Philosophy and Economics).
