About the Seminar

As the only two treaty allies of the United States in Southeast Asia, Thailand and the Philippines are uniquely positioned in relation to the growing US-China rivalry and growing Chinese influence and interests in the region. Drawing on two recent ISEAS Perspectives, The Philippines’ Alliance Problems, and Thailand’s Military Relations with China, this seminar will focus on Thailand and the Philippines’ changing defence relationships with the US and China. While the Thai and Philippine experiences are very different, each pose new questions for the future of the US alliance system in East Asia.

About the Speaker

Dr Ian Storey is Senior Fellow at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute. He specialises in Asian security issues with a focus on Southeast Asia. Ian is also the editor of the ISEAS academic journal Contemporary Southeast Asia. His research interests include Southeast Asia’s relations with the major powers and maritime security (especially the South China Sea dispute). He is the author of Southeast Asia and the Rise of China: The Search for Security and co-editor of The South China Sea: Navigating Strategic and Diplomatic Tensions. He was educated in the United Kingdom, Japan and Hong Kong, and prior to joining ISEAS, held academic positions in Hawaii and Australia.

Dr Malcolm Cook is Senior Fellow at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute since 2014. From 2003 to 2010, he was the inaugural East Asia Program Director at the Lowy Institute for International Policy in Sydney and then the inaugural Dean of the School of International Studies at Flinders University in Adelaide. Before that, he was a lecturer at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. Malcolm has worked in Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia and Singapore.
