Publication Ethics Statement

The Journal of Southeast Asian Economies is committed to responsible research publication. Accordingly, our publication ethics statement outlines the duties of authors, editors and reviewers, and is consistent with the international standards set by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). More information on COPE can be found here.

Authors (1)

  • Authors should submit work that is original and accurate, is not under consideration by any other publication, and has not been published elsewhere in any language. Authors are requested to inform the Editors if they are submitting a manuscript that has appeared elsewhere as an unpublished paper (i.e., not identified by an ISSN/ISBN) such as in a conference proceeding or as a working paper. Such submissions can be taken into consideration as long as they have not been published elsewhere as book chapters or journal articles.
  • Co-authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the research article/research note/book review/review article. It is the responsibility of the corresponding author to ensure that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript and have agreed to its publication.
  • Relevant data, and previous work, both by other researchers and the authors’ own, should be properly acknowledged and referenced.
  • All calculations, data presentations, submissions and proofs should be carefully checked.
  • Authors are expected to adhere to the Journal’s guidelines for manuscripts.
  • Funding sources and relevant conflicts of interests should be disclosed.
  • Authors should alert the Editorial Committee promptly if they discover an error in any submitted, accepted or published work, and should cooperate with the Editors in issuing corrections or retractions when required.

Editors (2)

  • The Editorial Committee is responsible for deciding which of the papers submitted to the Journal should be published. The Committee may reject a paper without peer review when it is deemed unsuitable for the Journal’s readers, is of poor quality, or does not adhere to the Journal’s guidelines for manuscripts.
  • The Journal has a clearly stated editorial policy that can be accessed here.
  • The Committee should ensure that suitable reviewers are approached to assess papers submitted for publication, and that reviews are received in a timely manner.
  • The Committee must protect the confidentiality of authors’ material and must remind reviewers to do so as well.
  • Manuscripts submitted by members of the Journal’s Editorial Committee and/or members of the International Advisory Committee are subject to the same rigorous double-blind peer review as all other manuscripts submitted for publication.

Reviewers (3)

  • Reviewers are selected on the basis of their expertise and knowledge to carry out a proper manuscript assessment within 3 months of their appointment as reviewer.
  • Reviewers are requested to be specific and detailed in their criticisms by: (i) providing evidence with appropriate references to substantiate general statements such as, “this work has been done before” and (ii) making clear which suggested additional investigations are essential to support claims made in the manuscript.
  • Reviewers should also respond promptly if contacted by the Journal about matters related to their review and accommodate requests to assess revisions or resubmissions of manuscripts they have reviewed.
  • The confidentiality of the manuscript should be respected by the reviewers.

Peer Review Statement

  • All articles submitted to the Journal for publication undergo rigorous peer review. The process consists of an initial screening by the Co-Editors and the Assistant Editor, followed by double-blind refereeing: two reviewers for articles and one reviewer for research notes.
  • Authors are encouraged to nominate 3 potential peer reviewers. However, the final selection of appropriate reviewers will be at the discretion of the Editorial Committee.
  • In the event of conflicting recommendations from the reviewers (i.e., one reviewer rejects a manuscript while the other accepts it for publication), the Editors have the discretion to either make a decision to reject or accept the manuscript for publication, or appoint a third reviewer. In the latter case, authors will be notified and made aware that the review process is to be extended. However, the authors will also be given the option of withdrawing their paper if they are unwilling to undergo the extended review process.

Disclaimer

The responsibility for facts and opinions presented in the articles published by the Journal of Southeast Asian Economies rests exclusively with the authors. Their interpretations do not necessarily reflect the views or the policy of the Editorial Committee, the International Advisory Committee, or the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.

Southeast Asian Affairs

Aim and Scope
Southeast Asian Affairs, produced since 1974, is an annual review of significant trends and developments in the region. The emphasis is on ASEAN countries but important developments in the broader Asia-Pacific region are not ignored. The publication seeks to provide readable and easily understood analyses of major political, strategic, economic and social developments within the region.

The publication has two sections: first a regional section which has articles of region-wide interest, and then a longer section focusing on the 10 individual countries of Southeast Asia. The latter includes the annual country reviews of the 10 countries as well as themetic articles on individual countries which are of a more specialised nature and deal with topical issues of concern.

Journal of Southeast Asian Economies

Aims and Scope

The Journal of Southeast Asian Economies (JSEAE) is a peer-reviewed multi-disciplinary journal focusing on economic issues in Southeast Asia.

JSEAE features articles based on original research, research notes, policy notes, review articles and book reviews, and welcomes submissions of conceptual, theoretical and empirical articles preferably with substantive policy discussions. Original research articles and research notes can be country studies or cross-country comparative studies.

For quantitative-oriented articles, authors should strive to ensure that their work is accessible to non-specialists. Submitted manuscripts undergo a rigorous peer-review process – two reviewers for original research articles and one reviewer for research notes and policy notes.

The journal is published three times a year: April, August and December.

JSEAE is indexed in SCOPUS and the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI).

The journal was published as the ASEAN Economic Bulletin between 1984 and 2012.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions are invited from all scholars. Past contributors to our publication include renowned scholars as well as younger professionals.

Articles should be of contemporary economic interest and have clear policy relevance. They should be pertinent to Southeast Asian countries or regional economic groupings such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Manuscript Guidelines

  • Full research articles should be between 7,000 and 8,000 words in length.
  • Research notes, which would include reports of research findings of shorter length, as well as reports of ongoing research projects, are also invited and should be between 4,000 and 5,000 words in length.
  • Policy notes, which are research notes with a policy focus, are also invited and have similar word length as research notes.
  • All submissions must be accompanied by an abstract of approximately 200 words that offers a broad summary of the manuscript. Specifically, authors should include the purpose, approach, results and implications of the research, while avoiding uncommon abbreviations and reference citations. The abstract should be comprehensible to readers before they have read the complete article. This must be followed by four to five relevant keywords in a separate paragraph. Effective use of keywords will make it easier for potential reviewers to evaluate the submission, and facilitate online searches after the paper has been published.
  • Articles should also be of a high standard of English (i.e., they should be clear, well-articulated, and comprehensible).
  • The broad format should be scholarly but tables, figures, citations, footnotes, and quotations should be kept to a minimum level essential for the analysis or descriptions intended.
  • The manuscript should be submitted as softcopy in Microsoft Word format.
  • Bibliographical references should be incorporated into the text using the author-date system, with page numbers where appropriate.
  • Endnotes should be kept to a minimum and numbered consecutively throughout the text.
  • Illustrations, charts, tables and figures must be black and white compatible. Charts and tables must be accompanied by their respective original data sets provided for in Microsoft Excel format.
  • All references should be listed alphabetically at the end of the article.
  • Please conform to the detailed manuscript and referencing guidelines listed in the Note to Contributors available here.

Submissions to the journal should be original contributions and should not be under consideration by any other publication. They are subject to external double-blind refereeing.

ASEAN Economic Bulletin

The Journal of Southeast Asian Economies was published as the ASEAN Economic Bulletin between 1984 and 2012.

The ASEAN Economic Bulletin (AEB) was launched by ISEAS (now known as ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute) in July 1984, and renamed the Journal of Southeast Asian Economies (JSEAE) in April 2013. The AEB received contributions from scholars, policymakers, think-tank analysts, and doctoral candidates providing empirical and policy relevant research in the following areas:

  • Economic development and cooperation issues affecting the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) grouping or any of its ten member countries;
  • ASEAN, or its members’ economic linkages outside the region, and its interfaces and relationships with the global economy.

The journal featured articles and research notes as well as book reviews pertaining ASEAN in the fields of economics and political economy. The AEB was published three times a year, with one of the three issues designated a “Special Issue” that highlighted a time-critical and important trend in the region.

Peer Review Statement

All research articles in the journal have undergone rigorous peer review. The process consists of an initial screening by the Co-Editors and Associate Editor, followed by double-blind refereeing: two reviewers for articles and one reviewer for research notes. Articles in special issues go through one double-blind review and two internal reviews.

Note to Contributors

Research articles
Contributions are invited from all scholars, especially those working in Southeast Asian universities and research institutions. Each article should be no longer than 8,000 words in length, including notes and references. It should be accompanied by an abstract of not more than 100 words and a note on the author’s affiliation.

The manuscript should be submitted as softcopy with a margin of 3 cm all round and typed with double spacing. Bibliographical references should be incorporated into the text using the author-date system, with page numbers where appropriate. Notes should be kept to a minimum and numbered consecutively throughout the text. All references should be listed alphabetically at the end of the article. For journal articles, the volume and issue number, month and year of publication and inclusive page numbers should be provided.

Research notes
Research notes and comments, which would include reports of research findings of shorter length, as well as reports of ongoing research projects, are also invited. Notes on conferences, seminars, and workshops, and comments on institutions devoted to Southeast Asia Studies are published as well.

Research notes are usually 3000-5000 words in length including notes and references. They provide details about current research. They are different from articles in that they do not have to have a conceptual or theoretical framework – they can be accounts of research methods, and they can present pilot, preliminary or exploratory findings. The findings should be explained and documented.

Contributors of Articles, Symposium, and Research Notes and Comments will receive two hard copies of the issue in which their contribution is published. They will also receive a PDF softcopy of their article along with a complimentary 3-issue subscription of the journal. Book Reviewers will receive one hard copy of the issue in which their review is published.
