Dr Zainal Abidin Bagir

Zainal Abidin Bagir teaches at the Center for Religious and Cross-cultural Studies, Graduate School of Gadjah Mada University and a board member of the Indonesian Consortium for Inter-religious Studies, Yogyakarta. His two main interests relate to the issue of democratic management of religious diversity and religion and science, with increasingly more focus on ecology. His recent publications include a 60-page survey on Indonesian freedom of religion or belief (published as part of a report on religious freedom in ten ASEAN countries, 2015); a report on Indonesian defamation of religion law (2018); a chapter on governance of religions in the Routledge Handbook of Contemporary Indonesia (2018) and a contribution on Islam and ecology in the Routledge Handbook of Religion and Ecology (2017). He and Robert W. Hefner (Boston University) are collaborating in a two-year research project which results in a book they co-edited (to be published by Notre Dame University Press, 2020) and a series of six documentary films on the topic of religion, democracy, and civic co-existence in contemporary Indonesia.
