Tuesday, 15 November 2016 – ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute organised a conference on Services Sector Liberalisation in ASEAN: Case of Logistics Sector. The two-day event was held on 15-16 November 2016 at the Institute. The Conference drew around 50 participants to discuss country-wise commitments and efforts in services sector liberalisation and the extent of success in attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the logistics sector.
 
Session 1: Opening Remarks and Introduction to Project
Dr Francis Hutchinson, Coordinator of the Regional Economic Studies (RES) Programme at ISEAS gave the opening remarks. The details of research project were jointly explained by Dr Tham Siew Yean, Senior Fellow of ISEAS – Yusuf Institute and Ms Sanchita Basu Das, Fellow from the same institute, in their capacity as co-coordinators of the project.

Session 2: Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia
The country paper from Singapore was presented the two authors, Ms Sanchita Basu Das, Fellow at ISEAS – Yusuf Institute and Ms Evelyn Ooi, Senior Analyst at TRPC, Singapore. Dr Ruth Banomyong from Thammasat University presented the country paper on Thailand while Dr Tham Siew Yean, Senior Fellow of ISEAS – Yusuf Ishak Institute presented the findings on Malaysia. Dr Francis Hutchison, Senior Fellow of ISEAS – Yusuf Ishak Institute, chaired the session.

Session 3: Vietnam
The Vietnam country paper was presented by Dr Nguyen Anh Thu, Vice Rector from the Faculty of International Business and Economics, VNU University of Economics and Business while the session was chaired by Associate Professor Teofilo C. Daquila from National University of Singapore.

Session 4: Indonesia and Brunei
Two country papers were presented in this session. Dr Titik Anas, Managing Director of Rumah Riset Presisi Indonesia presented the paper on Indonesia while Dr Joyce Teo Siew Yean, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Vice President (Global Affairs), Universiti Brunei Darussalam presented the country paper for Brunei. The session was chaired by Dr Siwage Dharma Negara, Fellow of ISEAS – Yusuf Ishak Institute.

DAY 2 - Wednesday, 16 November 2016

Session 5: Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia
Dr Phanhpakit Onphanhdala, Deputy Director, Laos-Japan Institute at the National University of Laos presented the country paper for Laos. The country papers for Myanmar and Cambodia were presented, respectively by Dr Min Ye Paing Hein, from the World Bank office in Myanmar and Dr Vannarith Chheang of the Southeast Asia Programme at the Nippon Foundation. The session was chaired by Dr Cassey Lee, Senior Fellow of ISEAS – Yusuf Ishak Institute.

Session 6: Closing Remarks
Closing remarks were provided by Dr Tham Siew Yean, Senior Fellow of ISEAS – Yusuf Institute.
 
The Conference concluded that although ASEAN member countries are keen to develop their logistics sector, there are numerous challenges that need to be overcome. Regional integration can facilitate the process of change through capacity building.
