Monday, 25 July 2016 – This morning ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute held a seminar on the 12 July Arbitration Tribunal ruling on the case filed by the Philippines addressing China’s actions in the exclusive economic zone claimed by the Philippines in the South China Sea.

Dr Ian Storey from the Institute provided the background to the Tribunal process, the key points of the 12 July ruling and how the interested parties have responded (click here to view the powerpoint slides). Professor Jay Batongbacal from the University of the Philippines provided an international legal perspective on the ruling and its effects on maritime rights claims of China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam.

Attended by close to 100 participants, the seminar noted how the tribunal ruling strengthened the claims of the five Southeast Asian states and undercut those of China and Taiwan.
