China’s New Policy and Its Impact: The Case of Chinese Indonesians

Date: 02 Nov 2018
Time: 10.00 am - 11.30 am
Venue: ISEAS Seminar Room 2

INDONESIA STUDIES PROGRAMME SEMINAR

About the Seminar

This seminar attempts to explain Beijing’s new policy towards the Chinese overseas and its impacts with special reference to the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia, a democratic Muslim-majority country. What has been its impact on ethnic Chinese business and economic status, education, mass media, community life, political orientation and ethnic relations in the country? Apparently the policy has uneven impact on the Chinese community in Indonesia. The impact can be felt among the business community, especially the older generation, Chinese-speaking businessmen who often have business links with China. The impact on the Indonesian-speaking population, especially the younger generation, appeared to be more limited. Nevertheless, more detailed and careful analysis is needed.
