REGIONAL OUTLOOK FORUM 2010

Thursday, 7 January 2010
Island Ballroom, Shangri-La Hotel

Is the worst global economic downturn since the Great Depression over? Experts’ opinions on this are divided between those who predict a fast "V-shaped" recovery, those who expect a slower "U-shape" recovery, and those who expect a "double-dip" or “W shaped” recession. Nearly all experts, however, agree there are fundamental weaknesses in the international financial system that needs revamping. Is the American dollar likely to lose its privileged position as the euro and Chinese renmimbi, perhaps the yen as well, assume bigger roles? Is the current situation of America remaining as the market of last resort and China as the factory for the world sustainable? What are the alternatives if the export-led growth model is no longer viable? Besides implementing national-based stimulus packages, China, India and Japan, and Southeast Asia, have taken baby steps towards building and coordinating regional-level financial/economic institutions and policies. Regional Outlook Forum 2010 has assembled an eminent group of experts to address the growth prospects and some of the key issues and questions confronting Asia.

Accompanying the worst global economic downturn since the Great Depression are major political changes and developments in United States and, in Asia, Japan, India, the Korean peninsula, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. How will the political and strategic trends unfold in Asia in these changing, and turbulent, times? If emerging protectionist policies gain traction, what are the global and regional political repercussions? Will the Obama administration and BRIC countries accommodate or challenge each other? What is the political outlook for Southeast Asia especially in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand?

The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS), Singapore, is proud to present the thirteenth ISEAS Regional Outlook Forum.  This event will address the political, strategic and economic prospects of the region in 2010 and beyond.  Among the eminent speakers at the Regional Outlook Forum 2010 are:

  2. Professor Yaga Venugopal Reddy, Professor Liqing Zhang and Professor Lee Jong-Wha on Re-balancing The Global Economic Order;
