Abstract

Shipping and Aviation emission were not included in the Kyoto Protocol of 1997(2005). Subsequently these two emission sources caught attention of the mass and the environmentalists. Shipping and Aviation emissions are regulated by ICAO and IMO respectively. New regulations are in the making to control and combat emission from these sources. Copenhagen COP/MOP conference in December 2009 will decide the climate regime of post-2012, when the Kyoto Protocol expires.

On the other hand, energy prices have been skyrocketing at an unprecedented rate. The price of a barrel of oil is currently about $145 and is expected to reach, as per some analysts, around $200 in the near future. This has prompted many in the quest for alternative energy sources and conservation of energies. As the price of oil remains high, the research and development in the field of alternate energy and conservation of energy will retain its momentum. High oil prices are a blessing in disguise.

The combination of this movement of curtailing emissions and energy consumption, despite many of its critics, is a blessing for the Researchers, Technologists and the overall good of mankind and their sustainability.

The lecture on the "Energy, Climate Change and International Shipping" certainly brings today’s most interesting and burning issues for discussion.

You are cordially invited to the Seminar.
