Abstract

A country’s natural resource endowment, its energy and industrial policy are critical determinants of its economic growth and development.  This is crucial in the context of Southeast Asian economies’ increasing dependency on oil, gas and coal imports as well as rising global commodity prices which affect these countries’ industrial competitiveness and energy security.  This presentation compares the energy feedstock and natural resource mix as well as energy and industrial policies in selected Southeast Asian nations with China and S Korea.  It concludes with a list of challenges and opportunities for Southeast Asian governments, state-owned and private–sector companies.
