Speaker
Ms
Shabana Azmi is an
internationally acclaimed actress, former Member of the Indian Parliament
(1997-2003), and a UN Goodwill Ambassador.
She is also a committed social activist who has given voice to issues
that affect people both in India and outside of India.
She was presented the Rajiv Gandhi Award and the Padma Shri in 1988 by
the Government of India — awards given to eminent citizens for excellence in
their field and distinguished contribution to society.
Her international recognition includes: the Martin Luther Chavez Perez
Award from Ann Arbor University for her work as a Visiting Professor and the
International Humanitarian Award from French President Francois Mitterand.
Since
1993 appalled by the then bloody riots between Muslims
and Hindus, Ms Azmi, a Muslim, has become a forceful critic of communalism and a
tireless crusader to end religious extremism.
Ms Azmi was also among the first
few celebrities to appear in campaigns to promote HIV/AIDS awareness at a time
when AIDS was still a taboo subject. Ms
Azmi is also the winner of an
unprecedented five National Awards for Best Actress in India for renowned films
such as Arth (1983) and Godmother (1999).
Abstract
Ms
Azmi will share her perspectives based on her experiences as a woman, a wife, a
mother, a politician, an artiste and a social activist.
Born to one of India’s best-known Urdu-language poet, Ms Azmi
has always spoken her mind on issues of development and politics, poverty
alleviation, the role of religion, women’s roles in society, the portrayal of
women in films, art and in religion. As an actress she will also speak of the tension between Art
and Politics.
ISEAS
has the pleasure of inviting you to the Seminar.
