Professor
Dr E U Petersmann is a leading authority on international trade law and has
worked in GATT and the WTO for 25 years. His
research on international law and economics has and continues to receive
worldwide acclamation.
He
has published 26 books and more than 200 articles/book chapters on international
trade law, policies and economics. He is also a co-editor of the Journal of
International Economic Law and a member of editorial boards of several
reputed international journals.
Synopsis
The
year 1995 witnessed the euphoric formalization of the WTO, which in essence
strives to achieve a just and equitable international trading system and
development for all member states. Today, after 10 years the WTO was formally
constituted, the appreciation and need for a rule-based multilateral trading
system remains strong. However, socio-economic and ideological cleavages between
and amongst member states have stymied the progress of the organisation. Against
this background, it is important that the substantive as well as procedural
elements of the WTO process be re-examined, and a way forward be found to
re-invigorate the multilateral trading system.
In
his presentation, Professor Petersmann will discuss the main findings from his
book: Reforming the World Trading System: Legitimacy, Efficiency and
Democratic Governance (Oxford University Press, 2005). He will analyse
the WTO system and Doha Round negotiations from an economic, political and legal
perspectives. Amongst others, the book addresses pertinent issues such as: The
Doha Development Round and the Future of the WTO: Policy Proposals;
Building–Blocks for Concluding the Doha Round Negotiations on Agriculture; The
Doha Round Negotiations on Services Trade; Less-Developed WTO Members in the
Doha Round Negotiations; Challenges to the Political Legitimacy of the WTO
System. The book provides perspectives of leading scholars, practitioners and
WTO officials.
The
seminar would be of great interest to trade policy officials, the business
community, academia and international observers.
You
are cordially invited to the Seminar co-organised by ISEAS and SBF.
